四年前まで飼っていた犬が全盲だった。
でも、とりたてて「世話が大変」とかいう事はまるでなかった。
今になって「よく考えたら、あいつ目が見えなかったんだよね」というくらい。

こないだ家族でその犬の思い出話をしていて、一つ驚いた事があった。
家の中と庭では自由に歩き回っていたそいつも、
散歩の時だけはリードを繋がなければ決して歩こうとしなかった。
人間がリードを引っ張る微妙な角度で、
止まる・右へよける・左へよける・段差がある・・・
等の路面状況を、奴に判断させていたからだ。

「特に教え込んだわけでもないのに、よく理解してたよね」という話になり
ふと疑問に思って、家族にそれぞれの合図の出し方を聞いてみたら

俺の「止まれ」→真上にリードを引く
姉の「止まれ」→斜め後方に引く
母の「止まれ」→小刻みに何度かリードを引く(俺の「段差がある」の合図と同じ)
父の「止まれ」→「止まれ～」

という具合に、皆全然違う合図を出していた事が判明。
犬は家族のクセを、全部読み分けていたのだった。
俺達が「世話が大変」と思わなかったのは、
奴のそんな努力があったからなんだな・・・と、しんみりした。

しかし、そんな俺たち家族にも、共通していた事はあった。
リードを伝わってくる、奴からの全幅の信頼感だ。
クサい表現になるけど、あのリードは正に俺達の絆を繋いでいた。
目隠しをして紐一本で繋がれて、「さあ歩け」と言われても
なかなかできるものではないだろう。

奴が死ぬ間際まで使っていたリードは、未だに壁にかけてある。
